Unfinished election business: Challenging racism and bigotry | rabble.ca: Fortunately, many others spoke out to challenge this dangerous ploy. From opposition politicians to the United Church and the labour movement, voices were raised to condemn the attempt to divide people by race or religion.

But many others stayed discreetly silent -- and we need to have an honest, perhaps difficult, conversation about that silence.

It's true that some long-time Conservative voters were troubled by the deluge of mean-spirited actions they could no longer support. In some ways the tactic backfired, as it motivated many new Canadians and young people to go and vote for the first time in response.
