CMSgt. Skip Overdier Wins Retired Military Person of the Year

Retired Military Person of the Year - Skip Overdier

Destin, Fla., Nov. 17 – CMSgt. (ret.) Skip Overdier was named Retired Military Person of the Year, during the Destin Area Chamber of Commerce’s Nov. 10 Leaders In Business Lunch. The award was created by the Chamber’s Military Affairs Council (MAC) in 2008 to honor a veteran active in the Destin area. It was presented by its 2009 winner and the current MAC chairman, Kim Wintner, Alliance Association Management Co. Inc.

“CMSgt (ret) Skip Overdier has been a very active member of the Destin Area Chamber of Commerce and its Military Affairs Committee since his arrival in Destin.  His volunteer work for the Chamber and in the community are demonstrative of exactly what this award is intended to represent and honor,” explained Wintner.

Overdier retired from his military service as a Chief Master Sergeant in May 1996, while performing duty as the Maintenance Superintendent of the 27th Component Repair Squadron, Cannon Air Force Base, N.M. Throughout his distinguished career, he had various assignments as an Air Force Recruiter, Squadron First Sergeant, Maintenance Group Superintendent, and Senior Enlisted Advisor. Only 1% of the Airmen who enter the U.S. Air Force Basic Training achieve the rank of Chief Master Sergeant.

Currently, Overdier serves as the 1st Vice Commander of the American Legion Post 296, a position he has held since 2013. He is also a member of the Destin Area Chamber of Commerce, as well as its Ambassador Program and its Military Affairs Committee. He is a 2015 graduate of the Chamber’s Destin Forward community education and leadership program. A member of the Knights of Columbus since 2012, Overdier has served as the Destin Council Recorder; co-chair of the 2015 Charity Golf Tournament, which sponsors several military teams from local bases; and Faithful Navigator of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Assembly, which fosters the spirit of patriotism by promoting responsible citizenship.
