LUDINGTON — Ludington Police Department has promoted Officer Michael Haveman to the position of sergeant, effective today. Haveman replaces Dean Schultz, who retired last week.

Haveman earned an associate of science degree in criminal justice from Grand Rapids Community College and began his law enforcement career as a seasonal police officer with the Ludington Police Department in June of 2001.  He was hired as a full-time police officer on October 5, 2001 and has worked as a patrol officer, and as a member of the State, Sheriff, Cities Enforcement of Narcotics Team (S.S.C.E.N.T.).  Haveman serves as one of the two departmental firearms instructors, as a departmental field training officer (F.T.O.) as well as serving on the Mason County Search and Rescue Coalition.

“This promotion is the result of the LPD promotional process in which a number of candidates participated in a written examination, an oral interview panel comprised of interviewers from within the department as well as from outside law enforcement agencies,” Chief Mark Barnett said. “The candidates’ work experience, performance and education were also factored into the process and a promotional list was established.  Sgt. Haveman was promoted based on his standing on that list.”
