Trevor Noah has signed on to perform and take questions at Los Angeles’ Politicon, marking his first West Coast appearance since debuting as host of The Daily Show this week. Set for October 9-10, Politicon is a sort of extension of the political petting zoo that is the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington. Originally intended as a gathering of politicians and the journalists who cover them, that annual clambake — with its slew of pre- and post-dinner parties — has been broadened to include comedians who mock the politicians and the journalists who cover them, actors who play politicians, actors who play journalists who cover politicians, unemployed politicians who aspire to be journalists covering politicians – and a good time is had by all.
Politicon is the same, in many ways. For instance, it will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center, which is not unlike the Hinkley Hilton in Washington — at which the White House Correspondents’ Dinner is held — in scale and ugliness. Noah will meet many of the same people he will meet when he inevitably attends the next WHCD, including Ann Coulter, Newt Gingrich, Tony Hale, Michele Bachman, Clay Aiken, Michael Steele, Doris Kearns Goodwin and Noah’s own Daily Show correspondent Jordan Klepper, who no doubt will be collecting material with which to regale their viewers in a report from the West Coast orgy of political junkies, participants and opportunists.
