CELTIC will face Ajax Amsterdam, Turkish giants Fenerbahce and Norway’s Molde in Group A of the Europa League after today’s draw in Monaco.
The ballot means the Hoops will face their old Dutch foes for the second time in three seasons after meeting them in the Champions League group stages in 2013/14 season.a-9ORJ38D_J1z4KaKapRskZtlYReJyc6hL9Fn7oKSbg
Neil Lennon was in charge as a penalty-kick from James Forrest and a deflected drive from Beram Kayal gave Celtic a 2-1 win in Glasgow.
However, Frank de Boer’s outfit got revenge with a 1-0 win in the Dutch capital that ended the SPFL champions’ interest in Europe for the campaign.
Celtic enjoyed success at the Amsterdam ArenA in 2000/01 during Martin O’Neill’s first season.
On a memorable night for the Parkhead side, goals from Chris Sutton, Didier Agathe and Bobby Petta gave the visitors a 3-1 win.
There was a nervy return in Glasgow, however, when Ajax won 1-0, but Celtic, with Rab Douglas in good form, held out for a 3-1 aggregate triumph.
The clubs first met in the old European Cup format in the 1970/71 quarter-final in Holland.
Jock Stein’s men were holding Johan Cruyff and Co until the last 20 minutes when the roof fell in and the home side rattled three goals behind Evan Williams without reply.
The second leg was switched to Hampden and Jimmy Johnstone scored the night’s only goal, but it was too little, too late.
In 1982/83, Celtic had one of their most memorable European nights after drawing 2-2 with the former European kings at Parkhead.
Charlie Nicholas and Frank McGarvey netted in a thrill-a-minute occasion in Glasgow, but were rank underdogs for the second leg.
However, Nicholas scored a fantastic solo goal and, with the score tied at 1-1 with only minutes to go, George McCluskey slotted in the winner.
A repeat performance would be welcomed by Ronny Deila this time out!
