An elderly couple from Guelph managed to get to safety after a fire started in their home Friday night.

The blaze started shortly after 10:00 p.m. on Northumberland Street near the city’s core.

Captain Colin Hunter Captain with Guelph Fire Department said, “The fire started in the back of the house, [there was] substantial fire and smoke damage to the back of the property and inside the home."

The two homeowners managed to get out of the home with the help of neighbours.

Both were taken to the hospital for observation.

Next door neighbour Waldo Gundrum said he was in bed at the time when his wife woke him up.

"My wife said, get up, get up, get up, there's a fire, I ran out and I saw the fire... and my wife called for help... Nobody had called firefighters for help." said Gundrum.

Fire prevention officers are now on scene trying to determine what caused the blaze.

Captain Hunter says, in their investigation, they will also be looking into if there were working fire alarms in the home.

No damage estimate has been provided, but Hunter confirms the contents inside of the home were badly damaged.
