1 in 6 killings in Rio de Janeiro are by on-duty police - Telegraph: Earlier this year, there was public outcry when a 10-year-old boy was killed by military police during an operation in the Alem�o favela complex in the north of Rio.

Eduardo de Jesus was shot on his doorstep.

"I just heard a bang and a cry,” said his mother, Terezinha Maria de Jesus, 40. “When I ran outside I came across the horrible scene of my fallen son there.”

The case is being investigated but meanwhile, the boy’s family has received threats and has left their home for fear of reprisals.

“Rio de Janeiro is a tale of two cities,” said Atila Roque, director of Amnesty Brazil.
