STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - A Port Richmond man is accused of stabbing his neighbor in the stomach after arguing with the man outside his home.

John Troino, 55, got into an argument with the man at about 2:45 a.m. July 25 on the 200 block of Heberton Avenue, then followed him into his home and stabbed him with a kitchen knife, according to authorities.

The victim required surgery to treat the wound, authorities allege.

Police arrested Troino on Tuesday. According to court papers, he told police, "This is all a misunderstanding and self defense. I want my free lawyer."

He's charged with second- and third-degree assault, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and second-degree harassment, according to information from Acting District Attorney Daniel Master's office.

He was arraigned Wednesday in Stapleton Criminal Court and remains held on $2,500 bail until his next court appearance Monday.
