Del Potro has hardly played in 2015 after sitting out the bulk of last season following surgery to his left wrist. In a video message released Monday, he told fans doctors found yet another problem with his tendon, one that would require additional surgery.

The New York Times' Christopher Clarey shared the video:

Del Potro reached the ATP World Tour Finals in 2013 and was widely regarded as one of the biggest talents in tennis at the time, but injuries have since taken their toll on the Argentinian's career. Once a top-five player, he currently finds himself outside the top 500 of the ATP rankings altogether.

He rushed himself back to the court after his first surgery in 2014, which may have impacted the recovery process and led to a second surgery. With the pain persisting, Del Potro is making a smart decision in delaying his return to competitive tennis and opting for a third procedure.

It will be a long road back to the top of the men's tennis circuit, and fans can only hope this third surgery will rid Del Potro of the issues with his wrist once and for all.
