This author writes some of my favourite Nigerian romance and I always go into her books expecting some sexy, authentic storytelling with a lot of heart and a good dose of seamless social commentary. And I definitely got that along with an unexpected Notting Hill-adjacent plot except here fame and success are not the source of conflict, a tumultous childhood and resultant daddy and mommy issues from the hero are.

This is the second book in this Cupidess Mismatch series. I’m a stickler for reading series in order and indeed I have read the first book and I felt in on the back story having that backgrounding, but it is absolutely not necessary to read that first. This stands alone on its own very well. The premise of this book is that British tv star, Justin is in Nigeria searching for the father who he blames for destroying he and his mother’s life when he was a child. The catch is he has no idea of the man’s identity having been left with a single photograph at a Liverpool bar by his late mother. While in Nigeria, he signs up to an indie dating site and reaches out to a woman who inexplicably catches his eye. Meanwhile Adanna is hardly expected to believe that actual famous Justin Igwe, has signed up to her failing dating site and that moreover, she’s caught his eye. Besides, she has bigger fish to fry as she’s being sexually harassed at work and as a result her job is in jeopardy. Yet meeting Justin and finding out he’s the real deal changes everything. Except he allows his demons get in the way of his romantic relationships again.

Despite the fact that the title was somewhat of a catfish, I liked a lot of things about this romance. The characters were a delight and Adanna was independent and real and relatable. I loved her relationship with Justin especially given the fact that she was a fan of his prior to their meeting. I thought the development of their relationship was adorable without it feeling like a fan-girl based attraction. Their banter was great and the sexual chemistry was pretty hot. In Adana and Justin, the author created two characters that I really cared about and wanted to work out. Sure, there were elements of wishing Justin would sort himself out and Adanna would accept help, but you almost enjoy them more because of the personal growth journeys they make by themselves for themselves. I really liked what little we saw of the secondary characters. We got really brief cameos from Adanna’s brother and best friend from Book 1 but I wish Brenda had a chance to be a friend to Adanna and help Adanna process some of what was going on in this book. Similarly, I loved Justin’s foster family but I wished they played more a role in this- I mean even confiding in them about Adanna, for example.

It should be noted that there’s a lot of potentially triggering content in this from drug addiction and abuse to abandonment and neglect in childhood to sexual assault and sexual harassment in the workplace… it could be a lot so reader discretion is advised. I thought these elements were dealt with pretty responsibly on the balance. I do wonder what would have happened without the Deus Ex Machina resolution to the sexual harassment subplot but it was fairly unproblematic even though maybe a little simplistic. I feel similarly about the resolution of Justin’s trauma healing story angle. The twist at the end felt a little forced to me. I do appreciate what the author was trying to do with that plot but for me, I’m still processing what I feel about it- my initial reaction was one of discomfort with the narrative created about who’s a reliable source, but after reflecting on it, I do think it is interesting and that the discomfort it triggers is worth interrogating within myself and would be interesting to discuss with others.

I’m still yet to read a book by this author that I dislike. This wasn’t my favourite from her because I did feel there were occasionally some flow issues, but that didn’t detract from my enjoyment of this book. I think this author loves romance and believes in Nigerian love and because of that always really captures well the zeitgeist of contemporary Nigerian aspirations of love. So, to me, she’s incapable of writing a bad romance. I recommend this book as I recommend all her others, but I particularly recommend this if you like celebrity romances with a heroine that knows her worth and a hero whose unique selling point is more than the fact that he’s hot and famous.

I finally get around to read and finish this sweet read, it has been on my TBR since it came out.
Amaka Azie is a prolific writer that has won my heart since forever😁.
✨My boss's son touched on matters that are always on the front burner nowadays. I love how she made the story very relatable having salient lessons within.
✨Adanna and Justin's characters were very real in their dialogues and acts. I loved that they went through what could be described as real life hurdles and had practical steps of how they scaled through. I don't want to give out spoilers😁😁
✨I also learnt that romance should not take away common sense 😊😊. Both parties should be encouraged to do better for themselves, so they can do better by their love interest.
✨Some characters in the book had me 😲😲, but I guess they didn't know better.
In all, it's a good book.

This is a highly sensitive book. It deals with emotional baggages yet manages to insert heart warming romance.
Two people who shouldn't have met, did and became fast friends. But no matter how they denied their feelings, it hurtled to the fore. And with deeper feelings comes a need to dig and know more.
These ones weren't ready to know more or show more.
This is a story about a British movie star and a next door girl from Nigeria.

Amaka! You have outdone yourself again.
You keep lifting the bar with every book you write but somehow reach and surpass that height with a new book.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Justin and Adanna's story.
It felt so real!
I felt every emotion on those pages.
Totally relateable because we all know someone, or who knows someone who has been propositioned before to be able to get ahead in the workplace.
Thank you so much for your gift that keeps on giving.
Until our next adventure...🥂

Wow! I loved it!

Adanna and Justin's love story is sweet and heartwarming. I loved that Adanna was strong and assertive, knowing her worth and going for what she deserves. Justin's search for his father leads him back to Nigeria and into the arms of the woman meant for him, finding love in the unlikely places. In the end, love wins.
Thank you, Amaka, for this wonderful story.
I would highly recommend it to lovers of romance stories, especially ones featuring African characters.
Looking forward to reading more of your books.

A great romance that had me boiling with anger at what Adanna had to go through at work. She was a strong, dynamic heroine who grew throughout the story.
Justin has to deal with his past and his issues so that he can fully live his present.

The two had a sizzling chemistry and I rooted for them the whole time.
