[June 23, 2008] Entry 7: Canada Bound!!! HK reflection?

Hello Hello!

So they say "everything is FAST in HK"...their service is fast, the trains are faster (comes every 2 minutes...beats waiting 15 minutes in Edmonton...OMG), people eat like a tornado is approaching, their self reflection is fast, and grannies even walk faster! Inevitably, I must agree with this common phrase. Returning to HK for the 4th time, I think this has got to be the ultimate trip! I had so many new experiences: Travelling alone in HK (both day and night), developing a group of HK friends (can't really call them fobs anymore!), bargaining (wow! it takes so much patience!), sleeping on a boat, spending money (that isn't my father's...cough cough...I'm definitely a big girl now!), going to a church with a billion levels, sleeping on a couch with no air conditioning for 1.5 months (free sauna...eww...), I could go on, but this is not my reflection and memories document. (Hopefully, I'll have time to type that up soon.) Above all, my trip to HK is coming to an end. I can't exactly say that I regret not staying longer, but I have left so many memories behind. It's time for me to return to my home, as I bring back new experiences and a plan for the future! I know that I want to return to HK - this for certain.

On a different note, I purposely forgot to tell you guys that I lost my cell phone in HK... I know...how un-Tammy (ma)-like!!! I'm still yelling at myself...3 others have already helped my mum discipline me...friends included. haha! It was during my 3rd week here. How embarassing! It was a gift from my uncle in HK too...well, I had my bday here, right? My loving uncle and I agreed that I should have some sort of punishment and since purchasing a second phone was an unnecessary investment, he bought me half a phone =D I am now a proud owner of the Nokia 5310 - colour: hot pink! I will share my other AMAZING purchases with you in another email. And they are quite AMAZING! haha. Gosh, I'm going to miss my $4 set meals!

I was planning to write a nice long email to you guys, but unfortunately my aunt just finished cooking and I must be off! My granny is calling for me in the distance too...more like 2 metres away! Take care, everyone! I will write again soon. Don't worry, I'll keep you posted...I have trip #2 on the way! (sorry if I'm really filling your inboxes)

To those in Vancouver, I'll send some of your my flight details! Maybe we'll get to meet!!!!
To those in Edmonton, I'll contact you ASAP. Especially if you're my supervisor at work...haha!
To those in Toronto, I will contact some of you ASAP to confirm trip details and our reunion!
To those in Hong Kong, thank you, thank you, thank you - For absolutely everything! We MUST Keep in touch!

Love,
Tammy

[June 17, 2008] Entry 6: Yes Future Leaders' Conference @ CUHK

Hello Everyone!

I am currently sitting in the Journalism Computer Lab at the Chinese University of Hong Kong! How exciting! I just wanted to quickly send out an email before I run off to welcome the groups back from the City Hunt event! (by the way, this is the actual entry 6. I must be losing track of my time here in HK) They have been gone for about 5 hours now and they get 7 hours to complete a list of both major and minor tasks around Hong Kong. The theme of our conference is Leadership and Environmental Sustainability, so undoubtedly, these tasks are 'somewhat' related! I'm just wondering how the taxi drviers in HK will feel about turning off their engines...haha! I'm having soo much fun here! It feels like Shad packed in 3 days and I have even MORE respect for all the planning of my/our Shad PA's!!!! <3

My room is pretty big and our residences are divided between male and female buildings! That's a little complicated, since one of the groups that I am help leading has 4 boys and 5 girls so we couldn't chat altogether at night! Nonetheless, there is no CURFEW! ah haaa. Ok, apparently, there is a curfew for entering the building though...some headmistress sits in the lobby...that was weird. Regardless, I lead my female group members in some deep discussions in my room until 04:00 last night and we were able to break many of our initial barriers...! It feels so unique to connect with these girls from HK. They have given me a new insight on the students here! I felt a little bad, since they had just completed a University Hunt for 4 hours in extremely heavy rain that day!

Time to go, I'll write more next time!

Tammy =)

[June 7, 2008] Entry 5: Update and Reflection from Trip to Korea

Dearest friends & MacShadsters!

It's been a while, so this is a 'tad' long! =) [note: there is a pointform list below]

First of all, I hope everyone is having an amazing month of June so far! AP/ IB exams are over and Prom week is here (or has just gone by)! Only a few more weeks of exams, summatives, homework, and high school! I am really happy to have heard back from many of you. I know everyone is pretty busy this time of year, so thanks for taking the time to read my emails! I'm glad you're enjoying them or finding them very "relaxing to read!" Sorry if they are filling your email inboxes though! (hehe)

I returned from Korea 3 days ago and finally finished my renewal application! Now the weight is lifted and I don't have to think about it anymore! Regardless, tomorrow I will be going to Macau with my family to celebrate my birthday and some Chinese festival! I look forward to visiting the two newest casinos there: The Venetian and MGM Grand. I was watching National Geographic Asia and watched the construction of The Venetian! Very cool and what a Shad thing to do! haha! It was all in English, so no wonder my grandmother fell asleep next to me. (oops!) I've been spending a lot of time with her this summer, so I'm really happy. In fact, I've been showing her my camera and taking lots of videos of our conversations!

Some other updates from my stay in HK thus far: I've been travelling around HK alone more often! It's great! I'm actually feeling like a citizen and not just a vistor holding a citizenship card. Going to the university and spending time with some new friends from HK is just a part of the journey! I saw some HK musical group, EO2, in Mongkok filming a commercial a week ago. That was pretty cool, albeit having no idea who they were at first! It was raining extremely heavily today, so people didn't have to go to work! Code Black thunderstorm or something! Other than that, I've just been attending many meetings about the conference coming up! I'm extremely excited for that! I have the funniest story from our meeting. This guy was trying to explain something to me in English, in hopes that I would understand him better, but I ended up having another guy reiterate - in CHINESE - what he was saying! Too funny! I'll save the rest for another update! ("Observations and Memories from Hong Kong.")

I haven't had too much time to write up my reflection on Korea, but I will outline my trip below in point form. Enjoy!

Observations, Memories, and Notes from Korea:

Cars: In 5 days, I saw 1 Ford, 4 Mercedes Benz, 2 Porches. The rest were either Hyundai, Kia, or some Korea brand!
Public places do not turn on the air conditioning unless it is 26'C or higher; however, the climate is not hot and humid like it is in HK.
In 5 days, I saw only 1 McDonalds! That absolutely amazed me. Finally, one country where I don't have to witness that infamous "M."
Re: Do all the women in Korea look like they've had plastic surgery? I can tell from the rather distinct facial features of the younger people that many of them have, but I can't justify if "all" of them do! Eyelids with double eye lines 'most likely' signify cosmetic surgery though!
People spoke to me in Korean....maybe I can pass off as being Korean now too!
I successfully asked, in Korean, where the restrooms were! Boy do I sound proud...haha! (thanks K boy + hbj)
Korean kids are the cutest!
All the women wear at least 2 inch heels, if not higher! Despite being taller than most of the women in Korea (this made me VERY happy), they all "looked" taller than me! Grr...
I can't stop bowing now. Maybe Koreans have stronger backs simply by exercising it all the time. (I kid!)
People seem to protest quite frequently and just about anything! Traffic jams occurred in the downtown area almost every day!
Hello APM - the store/market that opens 24/7! Seriously...it's even 8 floors high! Shopping in Korea is unbelievable! I was paying with tens of thousands in won! haha!
I finally purchased Korean stationery IN KOREA! (Morning Glory brand) =D (my mum was complaining about me buying stationery all the time again...for those of you who don't know, I have a collection of unused stationery sitting in my room)
I'm wondering...how can the driver watch the road AND his mini LCD sceen at the same time??? Honestly, my bus driver was watching a Korean drama while driving!!! I felt so safe........well, for one thing, Korean drivers are better than Hong Kong drivers...to some extent!
Climate: a little dry, but rather clean air.
Bulgogi burgers at McD's! You can even order cups of corn there! haha!
In Yong Pyong, it felt like I was in Jasper or Banff. The air was so fresh and it was soo beautiful!
By the way, I took over 1000 photos in 5 days!
It was amazing to visit the area of Lee Myung Bak's residence! (the President of South Korea) It's cooler than the White House! And the gaurds (on their roller blades!) love to take photos with you!
This was the first time I saw a "Rent-a-Phone" booth at the airport!
Get ready for this...but at the HK airport, I saw 4 members from JABBA WOKKE! (*sp). I have no idea why they were there and I wasn't stalking them...but they were on their way back to Atlanta or Chicago via United Way airlines! It took me a while to figure out who they were, but I was sneaking photos of them and this one guy was looking at me! haha. I'll post photos sometime soon.
At the Incheon Int'l Airport, I saw the "Iraq Taekwondo Military Team!" WOW! I took a few photos of them too, but was getting a little scared when one of the members kept looking at me.
I have never eaten so much hot pot in just 5 days! I love bibimbap (sp) and seawood though! On the contrary, I still have not developed a liking for kim chi, but I did go to the Kim Chi school and learn how to make it! =D
Some places I went to while in Korea: Lotte World (indoor amusement part and mall), Everland theme park, Daedamun Market, Shinsegae Mall, Spa and resort (it was absolutely relaxing to sit in a tea, wooden, rain, air, etc. spa. The apple perfume spa actually had green water!)

That's all for now! I have to get running, as my second cousin from Toronto is coming over. I've never met him before, but apparently we're sharing the living room! Oh my...I guess 8 people have to share one bathroom tonight! (I'll survive...please pray that I don't have bowel problems by the time I return to Canada!) Take care!

I miss you all,
Tammy

[June 1, 2008] Entry 4: Hello from Korea (Yong Pyong)

Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to send out a quick "hello from Korea!" I'm in Yong Pyong or Yong Chang..I can't remember the name...but if you watch Korea dramas, apparently this is where they shot many scenes from "Winter Sonata." It's a very popular ski resort in the winter months! woww!! From what I've been told, they would like to host the 2018 Winter Olympics here.

I have to be quick, because I might get booted out of here any minute...Anyways, Korea is very beautiful and the food is absolutely delicious!

I'm getting a little scared...so I must return to my room, but I went to Everland today!!! (Samsung opened it!) It was soo much fun, despite not understanding any of their directions for the rides. (there are 40 of them!) ah...it brought back memories from Tokyo Disneyland. I've also met a senior couple on my trip. They are from Australia!!! (sydney).

Regardless, take care everyone! and HAPPY SPRING! (It's the Spring Festival here...)

Tammy

[May 25, 2008] Entry 3: Hong Kong Update

Hey everyone!

I havent' had the internet for about 2 weeks...well, since MOther's day. I was a little scared to open my gmail today...83 unread emails! urg! All these buttons are in Chinese too...it's ok, because clearly, I've managed. I'm supposed to be shopping downstairs, but I decided to quickly check my email, since the next time...will be on Friday. Here's a quick update.

First of all, sorry for not reading yours yet, but I promise I will get to it! I PROMISE! So, like my last email said, I went to an alumni event and met a huge group of Chinese shad-like friends. I can't wait for the conference, but before that I have an announcement. It's nothing too big, but I'm going to Korea next week! How exciting! Someone teach me how to ask where the restrooms are in Korean please? And "how much is this?"

Secondly, I'm sure you've all heard about sichuan. I still can't believe that I was in Hong Kong when that happened. It's painful to watch the news. Every day, the death toll is higher. I think this morning, I heard that it is over 60 000. I'm really happy with the Canadian dollar though! go us go! Shopping here is like buying fruits at the supermarket. ok...terrible analogy....but I've created a list of some observations I've made...I'll share that with you soon. I should have brought my thumb drive today...ahh...I actually wrote up an email to paste. Back to sichuan...I'm really happy to see the combined efforts of HK, China, TW, and Korea. I've seen World Vision, various relgious groups, and Oxfam raising money! I haven't heard much from N. America though, but I'm sure they're doing something!

Anyway, I better get going. IB EXAMS should almost be over, right? KEEP IT UP! and have fun at GRAD. Please save me a grad photo...if I've asked you. I stood in the rain outside of a high school in HK last week promoting our event to students who just completed their governmental exams. other than that, it's been raining a little here...and I've been killing too many moths. It's making me feel bad. I'm becoming desensitized. OH yah - I have 3 pairs of new glasses! You'll have to see them soon. :D I'm off shopping now! I went to HK Disneyland already...space mountain is like riding the mini bus...I'm waiting for my other frd from Edmonton to come back and we'll go to Ocean Park. Tonight, I'm also going to some talk show at some huge exhibition...some prof is having a really interesting lecture.

ok, my mum is calling now, I'll talk to you soon. Please continue to send your emails! take care and God bless.

Yours,
Tammy

ps. I forgot to mention last time - it was really really good to see TONY and DORA at YVR when I stopped by in May. =) I've shown my granny your beautiful grad photos!

[May 11, 2008] Entry 2: Bonjour from Xiang Gang

Dearest MacShadsters! (and friends back at home)

I can't believe a year has almost passed since we all met each other! The same goes for the first year of university. WOW! Us University students have 4 months. I can hardly believe that. It's like, "wow, I have time for HK and Montreal/ T.O?" That's pretty crazy!

Nonetheless, I wanted to send you all quick shout, since I haven't had internet access for 5 days and I have no idea when the next time will be. (reason why this is sent to many ppl at once)

First of all, I'd like to wish you all GOOD LUCK on your IB/AP or whatever crazy academic exams you may have. (I'm currently using my second cousin's computer and she's studying the "American Revolution" for her own test.) Secondly, I wanted to tell you a little bit about my trip thus far. Btw, Julia, your DOT day made me really jealous! I have always wanted to go into the CBC building!!! Gosh, I'll be there in spirit! Well, I can't wait to see you guys really really soon! Regardless...

My flight was not exactly relaxing, but it was actually quite fun. Never have I been on a flight to HK on such an empty plane. There were literally people lying down across 4 seats! No lie! My mother and I each had our own two seats too. (I really like the window or aisle seats! Now, I had both!) I think I slept for 1.5 hours on the entire trip. (~13 hours). I alternated my activities between writing in my journal / eating Haagen Daiz ice cream, reading my friend's "plane letter" while listening to music, and watching movies! It was nice. My uncle and aunt picked us up and we drove home. It was about a 30 minute drive. Chinese people are crazy drivers!

Here's a summary of some of my activities and plans: It's been 4 days now, I believe, and I think I've had wayy too much sleep. My new room is HUGE...oh ya! I get the whole living room/dining room to myself! I sleep on a fold out bed...commonly known as a couch during the day. The housemaid drives my relatives up the wall, but I guess she does pretty much every thing...at the speed of a snail. Anyways, I took the bus to the shopping area near my home for the first time alone yesterday. I shopped at APM and bought a new hat at Esprit! My goal is to buy 3 new hats! Last Friday, I went to renew my HK citizenship card. I'm an adult now! yay! Afterwards, we went shopping in Prince Edward at Fa Yuen Street! It was fun, but really hot. 30C that day! Today, the weather is much better. I was actually freezing last night!

(sorry, this email probably sounds extremely disorganized...especially since all of you are used to writing ultra-academically during this period of time. My apologies. I haven't actually been able to speak English for more than 10 minutes at once until my friend called me last night! Thank God, I'm talking to some American relatives today!)

Moving on...I've been to 3 jewelery stores in the last 2 days. Some served tea to their customers , while others served canned orange juice! Service in HK is getting better, but I wouldn't say it's AMAZING... Something really funny happened yesterday. A lady asked ME of all people for directions and I confidently gave her an answer too! ahaha! Yesterday, I also went to see "The Forbidden Kingdom," albeit in Cantonese. The sweet popcorn was really scrumptious though! I'm not going to begin telling you about eating in HK...this email would never end.

This morning, I went for dim sum with my relatives and I'm just about to go to Mongkok "shoe street" and the Ladies' Market, I think. I'm not sure yet. I just know I'm going to buy some running shoes and some athletic wear for working out at the gym later this afternoon before our mother's day dinner! For the next few week, I will be attending an AIESEC alumni event and start planning for a conference, meeting up with some frds from Edmonton, seeing my God mother, and going to HK Disneyland! That's all I know for now. Take care!

Give me a shout when you're free or when you arrive in HK

PS. Please let me know if there is anything from HK that any of you would like! PLEASE TELL ME. Do not hesitate to tell your Tammy ma. I would love it if any of you

PPS. Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there! ;) It's so sweet to see all these mothers in HK. Alone in my household, there are 3. My aunt, my mum and my grandmother!

[May 5, 2008] Entry 1: Bon Voyage! (to HK)

Dear friends,

Before I begin my busy summer holiday, I wanted to take this last moment to wish you all a wonderful summer. Many of you have shared your plans with me and they sound quite interesting! However, none of which seem as busy as mine! Am I overloading again? I hope not!

There are literally 12 hours before my journey commences and I can tell you that at this moment I can barely read this screen. I am being sarcastic, yes, but I'm serious. I am really tired now. Sorry if this email is a little scattered. It was quite unpleasant attempting to fall asleep last night, so I decided to practice piano, albeit at 02:00. Sleeping at 03:00, my biological clock was set to wake up at 07:30 for some reason!

Today was an interesting day, however. First of all, I went back to visit my high school, and then went home, doing some very random tasks. The rest of my afternoon is history, because I am too tired to even remember what I did. All I know is that my mother made a million phone calls and my god mother from Hong Kong is currently on the phone with my mother.

Nonetheless, this is going to be short, as it is my first entry. It's been a long time since I've connected with some of you, so I hope you enjoy my series of events. I hope to send you a message whenever I get the chance to. If you start seeing too many emails from me - email me and I will take you off my list, but I'm pretty sure I won't have to, since I've only sent this to many of my closest friends! Clearly I am really tired right now. It would be great to hear back from you and we'll definitely have to keep in touch. For now, Bon Voyage and pray that it's a safe trip! Look forward to my millions upon millions of photos! By the way...I am flying to HONG KONG via Cathay Pacific and should arrive on May 7 in the evening.

Much Love,Tammy

PS. I cannot wait to see Joyce, Tony, and Dora at the Vancouver Airport who are my (confirmed) friends coming to see me at the airport! Ciao amigos!
