13th Annual Ice Bowl & Chili Cook-Off

What does disc golf, chili and non-perishable food have in common?

More than you think!

Hear the term  Ice Bowl and you may think of the 1967 NFL Championship game between the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys when game-time temps registered a frigid 13 degrees below zero. Brrr!

But that’s not the Ice Bowl we are referring to here. Instead, we are talking about the 13th Annual Fairmont Ice Bowl and Chili Cook-Off that will be held on Saturday, February 18 at Morris Park.

But before we get into the particulars, what exactly is an ice bowl as it pertains to disc golf?

Initially you might think it’s just a disc golf tournament that takes place in the heart of winter. But since these tournaments are played all across the country, not all will be played in frigid conditions.

According to the Ice Bowl HQ website, an “Ice Bowl is a collection of disc golf events that are held each year in January and February with an overall mission of raising funds to fight hunger. . . .”.

Although targeting the funds to fight hunger still holds true, the events of 9-11 expanded the mission to include other charitable organizations we well.

Helping fight hunger is what the Fairmont Flyers have been doing for the past 13 years. In 2016, the Ice Bowl raised $2,285 as well as 100 pounds of food.

The goal for the 2017 Ice Bowl is to raise $5,000 AND 500 pounds of food!
