VISIT Milwaukee has more than 600 members, including hotels/motels, restaurants, attractions, services and area businesses. Tourism generated $2.3 billion in spending in Greater Milwaukee in 2009 and supported about 58,000 local jobs. The City of Wauwatosa, Frontier Airlines, Potawatomi Bingo Casino and the Wisconsin Center District are strategic partners with VISIT Milwaukee, providing funding support for conventions and tourism programs.

VISIT Milwaukee’s public relations department needs a savvy intern to help us increase awareness of Milwaukee as a premier destination for meetings, conventions and leisure travel. We’re a busy department with plenty of opportunity for practical, hands-on experience in tourism PR. You’ll be assisting in diverse tasks such as calculating ad value for monthly reports, writing press releases, drafting travel itineraries for visiting media, writing web copy and assisting on media visits. Research skills, attention to detail, and the ability to successfully manage several projects at once are necessary in this position.

Intern responsibilities include but aren’t limited to

  1. Calculate public relations advertising value for monthly report.
  2. Maintain clip file.
  3. Member correspondence/report in relation to monthly clips.
  4. Assemble/send media kits as requested.
  5. Write/distribute news releases to media as required.
  6. Provide copy for bi-monthly travel writer e-newsletter.
  7. Provide copy for monthly phone “on hold” recorded message.
  8. Assist in development of travel writer itineraries.
  9. Assist as required on media familiarization trips.
  10. Compile research as needed relating to media lists, miscellaneous travel industry information, publication profiles and circulation, etc.
  11. Miscellaneous copywriting for advertorials, fact sheets, Web introduction, etc.
  12. Update media lists and media kit information as needed.
  13. Enter public relations department information into Destinations 3000 database.

Requirements:

  1. Prefer students with declared major in public relations, communications, journalism.
  2. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  3. Ability to organize multiple projects and meet deadlines
  4. Team player
  5. Professional attitude and appearance
  6. Experience in Microsoft Word and Excel and aptitude to learn new programs/software

This is an unpaid, 20-hour per week internship. Start and end dates of internship and individual schedule will be arranged at time of internship offer.
