Pacaltsdorp High School has become the first school in the Southern Cape, South Africa to install a sanitary pad dispensing machine, according to a George Herald report. The machine, part of the MENstruation Foundation's efforts to combat menstrual poverty, offers free pads to learners.
The vending machine, sponsored by Icon Construction, will provide sanitary products to approximately 420 students for the next two years. Learners will receive tokens to use the machine, ensuring they have access to essential hygiene products.
Marius Basson, CEO of the MENstruation Foundation, emphasized the importance of keeping girls in school and the need to destigmatize menstruation. He highlighted the economic burden faced by many women who cannot afford sanitary pads, particularly school-going learners.
Basson called for policy changes to address menstrual poverty, advocating for free sanitary products to be made accessible to all women. By providing free pads, the MENstruation Foundation aims to improve school attendance rates and reduce the stigma associated with menstruation.
