VISITORS to Newport's Transporter Bridge, which is officially reopened today, will be provided with information about the cityís iconic landmark by two new guides.

James Harris, 24, from Bettws, and Kayleigh Thompson, 18, from Lliswerry, will act as guides to the bridge at the visitor centre on the Pill side of the bridge.

Based at the visitors centre, which will be open seven days a week, the guides will sell souvenirs, greet visitors, answer questions and show visitors a DVD about the history of the bridge.

The project has been organised by the University of Wales, Newport, and the Friends of the Transporter Bridge and the jobs are being funded by the Future Jobs Fund - a government initiative which provides funding for younger people to do community work experience.

Ms Thompson and Mr Harris were both unemployed when they applied for the jobs.

Ms Thompson said she is really looking forward to starting the job after being made redundant in June last year.

Mr Harris was made redundant after the design company he worked for went bust.

The graduate said he lost count of how many job interviews he has had whilst unemployed for six months.

Mr Harris and Ms Thompson are on six month contracts and will start in their new roles on Monday.

The Transporter Bridge reopens for the first time in two years today after it was closed for safety work.
