“Fart Face” is funny. Really.
That’s what Emmy nominee Will Forte insists of a Saturday Night Live sketch that he did with Bill Hader that completely bombed. But in his opinion, the audience was wrong.
“It was two people in an office setting. One guy says, ‘I’d like you to stop calling me Fart Face, please.’ He’s like, ‘Oh, you got it, Bill. Sure.’ Then Josh Brolin comes in, and he’s like, ‘Hey, have you met Fart Face here?’ And, he’s like, ‘I thought I specifically asked you to stop calling me Fart Face.’ We thought, “OK, pretty solid sketch here.’ Then, no laughter. But Lorne somehow still put it into the show, and it was met with even more silence. But I watched it the other day, and I still stand behind that thing.”
That’s just one revelation to come out of THR’s Comedy Actor Roundtable, which features Portlandia’s Fred Armisen, 48; House of Lies’ Don Cheadle, 50, another Emmy nominee this year; The Last Man on Earth’s Forte, 44; Derek’s Ricky Gervais, 53, also up for an Emmy; Silicon Valley’s Thomas Middleditch, 33; and Key & Peele’s Jordan Peele, 36.
TV’s funniest actors also sound off on when to play the race card, their love of Louis C.K. and the humor they don’t get. Says Middleditch: “There are plenty of shows that get millions of viewers, and I’m like, ‘I can’t sit through 22 minutes of this.'”
For the first time, you can watch the roundtable discussion, debuting today on SundanceTV as part of the cable channel’s new original nonfiction series, Close Up With The Hollywood Reporter, produced in partnership with THR. And come back to THR.com on Monday for the full, uncensored discussion.
The series is comprised of 14 hourlong episodes, with the first of seven episodes — the Drama Actress Roundtable — kicking off Sunday, Aug. 2, at 11 a.m. ET/PT on cable systems and at 8 a.m. PT on satellite systems (Dish and DirecTV). New episodes will air every Sunday leading up to the Primetime Emmy Awards on Sept. 20.
The first half of the season will present filmed roundtable panels featuring Emmy nominees and other top stars of the year’s most buzzed-about shows, including drama actors and actresses, comedy actors and actresses, creators and showrunners from both comedies and dramas, and reality show hosts and producers. Guests will discuss everything from their individual projects to their craft and true stories of the business that keep them coming back for more. The panels will present thoughtful, informative takes on the film and television industry today.
