Galilee Basin coal will add to 'widespread suffering': leading scientists

Nine leading Australian scientists have signed an open letter to global banks urging them not to invest in the opening up of the Galilee Basin coal deposits in central Queensland.

The scientists include Nobel Laureate and immunologist Professor Peter Doherty and paediatrician and former Australian of the Year, Professor Fiona Stanley.

Fiona Stanley has launched a stinging attack on the 'political' nature of approvals for new coal mines, saying that the harmful health effects of coal are not being taken into account.
