I was asked why I care so much about toxicity in organisations. Here's why. I know I'm a high performer. First in my Master’s. Full scholarship to the FT’s top-ranked management school in Asia-Pacific. Highest achievable marks for my PhD, examined by world-leading names, including an HBR Guru. Stellar reviews from clients, students and peers. I think I know my stuff. But that’s not the full reason. This is. When I moved to Australia, my ex became abusive. She couldn’t cope with the culture change. She swore at me, spat at me, hit me, kicked me, threw objects, drew a knife. I never knew what would start the abuse. It was random. I spent so much energy trying to cope with the irrationality of her rage, that my work performance plunged. I was next to useless. A shell of what I can be. If it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone. When I was rational enough to walk out, she emptied my bank account and deleted all my emails and contacts. I had $20. And good friends who helped me. I've lived toxicity. I know how it destroys performance. I bear the scars. Literally. I then spent over a decade working out how to fix it. How to beat toxicity and bullying in the workplace. To help everyone become the high performer they can be. That’s what my Masterclasses do. That’s my why.
Dr. Richard Claydon, what is especially significant about your share is that while women are the most vulnerable to abuse, (I posted on this topic), men who are usually don’t talk about it publicly. Also, to reiterate and correct the myth, the reality bears repeating: abuse is prevalent in all cultures, regardless of education. I have prominent clients who have endured abuse, sexual harassment, sexual abuse and from all walks of life. As to your why: to make our relationships and environments safe for all. Companies need to stop protecting Bullies and Abusive Employees. They should be warned once.Second time Fired.
I would use a different word not toxic, Evil. People who try to destroy you by emotional abuse or physical abuse are EVIL. Evil people who Bully or Abuse others should be Fired. They leave collateral damage of lost customers and coworkers who quit.
