Vintage photos of Staten Island fairs and amusement parks; send us your pictures

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Even though there is still a nip in the air, this is the time of year when outdoor events and activities start cropping up on Staten Island.

For generations, families have enjoyed fun-filled days at fairs, festivals and amusement parks in every corner of the borough.

Residents have turned out in droves to attend them all -- from the Richmond County Fair, which began in 1895, to a myriad of cultural, ethnic and religious festivals that still take place on the Island today.

Visitors to South Beach from the early 1900s to the 1940s enjoyed the rides and attractions at Happy Land Amusement Park. The boardwalk featured a wealth of amusements, including ferris wheels, carousels, merry-go-rounds, pony rides, souvenir stands, casinos, hotels, tunnels of love, gypsy tents and roller coasters.
