Teen killed in apparent Midland Beach dirt bike crash

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- An 18-year-old man was killed Sunday night in what police believe was a dirt bike crash on Midland Avenue just past Egbert Intermediate School  in Midland Beach.

The circumstances of the crash, which occurred around 8 p.m., are unclear at this point. There was no evidence of a dirt bike at the scene.

The teen, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Alex Makaryan, who lives nearby, said teens often use the stretch of Midland where the crash is believed to have occurred to run their dirt bikes.

"They pop wheelies over here," said Makaryan, who did not witness the crash. "It's a nice stretch of road."

Detectives and members of the NYPD's Collision Investigation Squad are present at the site of the crash.

Meanwhile, throngs of teens, about 50 in total, are huddled in groups outside the emergency room at Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. Police have requested additional units to the hospital for crowd control purposes, according to emergency radio transmissions.
