Accra, April. 25, GNA - The Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing has inaugurated an eight member Board of Directors of the Engineering Council to regulate the practice of engineering.

Dr Kwaku Agyemang-Mensah, Minister of the sector said the inauguration was held to secure the highest professional standards in nation building.

He explained that the Board of Directors was the first ever to be inaugurated for the council and was necessary to strengthen the effectiveness of the engineering profession.

The Board members are, Mr Augustine Kuuire, Mr Jabez V. Duncan-Williams, Mr Kweku Ofori-Bruku, Mr Eric Amoah Asare, Mr Philip Kwame Kwarteng, Mr Erasmus Douglas Djarbeng, Mr Valence Wise Ametefe and Professor Samuel I. K. Ampadu.

Dr Agyemang-Mensah said the professionals need to be regulated by an established body with an appropriate code of conduct, hence the Board.

He noted that Government is quite concerned about the relatively high costs of its projects and also the unacceptably dependence on foreign materials in the construction industry.

'I believe that our Engineers can come out with more innovative ideas on how to curb this waste of government resources. Government will depend on your advice on this and other related matters of national interest as they affect the engineering profession', he said.

The Minster asked the engineers to broaden and strengthen their education and find innovative ways to achieve needed economic development in all areas while conserving and preserving natural resources.

He congratulated the Board and urged them to bring together all relevant key stakeholders to work towards achieving a common goal.

Mr Kuuire, Chairman of the Board, expressed member's gratitude to the Presidency for the confidence it has in them for such an important task.

He said they would work hard to ensure the development of the country and lead Engineers in the country effectively and efficiently to put the profession in the right perspective.
