The Pittsburgh Steelers have deepened their financial commitment to guard David DeCastro.
NFL Media's Albert Breer reported Thursday that Pittsburgh has picked up the fifth-year option on DeCastro, a former 24th overall pick. DeCastro becomes the third 2012 first-rounder to have his option picked up, joining Chargers outside linebacker Melvin Ingram and Colts quarterback Andrew Luck.
The decision to pick up DeCastro's option was a no-brainer for the Steelers. DeCastro bounced back from a first-year knee injury to become one of the best young interior linemen in football. ProFootballFocus.com graded DeCastro out as the 18th most effective guard in football among 78 qualifying candidates in 2014.
DeCastro has become a building block piece in Pittsburgh, and his versatility makes him a sensible candidate for a long-term deal. Thursday's move gives both sides plenty of time to get a second contract done.
