Current sweeps away elderly woman in Hendricks County

HENDRICKS COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – Rescue crews say an elderly female’s body was recovered from the water Wednesday evening near Pittsboro.

Crews were called to the 4700 block of Brookridge Drive before 8 p.m.

Police say a 75-year-old woman fell in and was swept away a few hundred yards from her home while she was trying to clear debris away from a pipe near a large ditch.

Her husband was outside with her and tried to rescue her, but the current was too strong. Pittsboro Fire Chief says the ditch had about 4 feet of water in it.

The Hendricks County Task Force recovered her body about a quarter of a mile away from where she initially fell in.

Thursday morning, the Hendricks County Coroner identified the victim as Doris Martin. The coroner said Martin was a retired teacher.

Richard “Rusty” King, superintendent of  the North West Hendricks School Corporation, released a statement Thursday morning:

“Doris Martin epitomized the term “Community Servant”. She touched thousands of children through her years of teaching and more recently as the School Marm for the One Room School House.  Her dedication to the students, not only in our school district, but also to the many that came from through out the state to attend the One Room School House was second to none.  She was able to bring history to life in a way few can.  Her dedication to her church and the youth there was exemplary of what a Christian should be.  You could find Doris and her husband Ernie at about any community event supporting those who gave back to and supported our community. Also, she served as Grand Marshall at our Fall Homecoming Parade this year representing the dedicated educators who have come and gone and those who are still here in our school corporation.  Because of the nature of our community there will be others who step up and do some of the work that Doris dedicated her life to. However, she can never be replaced. Her passing has left a hole in the hearts of many in our community.  She will be missed beyond what words can describe.”
