Family Travel

Traveling with the whole family can be incredible, but like all trips, requires advance planning to make sure everything runs smoothly, especially family travel with large groups. From making sure you can get a cot in your hotel room for the baby to ensuring you know about the family-friendly restaurants in the area, a little work can go a long way in making sure your family vacation is the trip of your dreams.

There are, of course, the typical family go-to’s that parents tend to dread and children love to clamor for. Disney World and Disneyland stand out as two of the most popular destinations for families. There are dozens of websites that offer advice for planning your Disney vacation, from suggesting what month to travel to detailing the order you should visit attractions in. If Disney is the way you’re planning, there is plenty of information online and at your local library to help you figure out the details.

If you aren’t sold on the Disney trip, here are three other family-friendly trips kids and adults can both enjoy:

1. Out ’n’ About Treesort

If your family is all about the outdoors, this “treesort” is for you. Located in beautiful Takilma, Oregon, Out ’n’ About Treesort will have you exploring the forest from a different perspective. The fourteen treehouses vary in size, and can hold families of up to eight. The resort has a sleep-away camp feel to it – horseback riding, ropes courses, rafting and arts and crafts are all available to visitors, along with the more typically swimming pools. If you’re looking for day excursions, explore nearby Cannon Beach or beautiful Crater Lake. Out ’n’ About is perfect for active families with older children and young teens (8-14) – younger children may need more supervision as they travel through the treetops.

2. Cruising the Seas

One of the best ways to keep the family together and make sure that everyone is happy about the trip is to take a cruise. This type of travel can be especially fun when traveling with big groups (ie. family reunions) or with multiple generations. Cruises offer activities for the kids that are staffed by responsible staff members, evening shows for the whole family and plentiful dining options that will tempt even the pickiest of eaters. Some of the most highly recommended cruises for the whole family are Star Princess’ Vancouver to Alaska route, which offers kids the opportunity to explore animals of the ocean with marine biologists, Celebrity Summit’s New Jersey to Bermuda trip, with it’s kids-only slumber party on the deck, and Oasis of the Seas’ Caribbean cruise, with a year-round ice rink and a zip line.

3. Everybody’s Going Surfing

If a little bit of sand and sun is key for your family’s happiness on vacation, check out Waikiki Beach in Oahu, Hawaii. Ty Gurney Surf School, which offers to teach kids as young as five to surf, has partnered with Trump International Hotel Waikiki Beach Walk to bring surfing to the masses. Other family-friendly Hawaii getaways include Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort, which boasts an impressive lazy river, Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa, which has an onsite zoo, and the Marriott Kauai Resort and Beach Club, which is on the best beach in Kauai. If you’re looking for a sunny seaside trip, Hawaii is perfect for the whole family.
