Rumors regarding Raphael Varane’s transfer to Chelsea are becoming more and more palpable as the Blues set aside a massive £40million in order to secure the Frenchman’s signature. According to Metro, Mourinho is determined to work with his former student once again. The 21 year old has been set aside since the Portuguese boss left and has struggled to compete with Pepe who looks like his direct contender for a spot in the starting squad. Varane is under contract until 2020 but there is little chance for him to stay at Bernabeu if Pepe is given a new deal. Chelsea have been keen on signing the central defender for a while now despite offering Terry a one year extension to his current agreement.

Even though it may sound exaggerated to pay that much money for a 21 year old defender, it is still something Chelsea need if they plan on consolidating their plans for the future. Building a perfect and complete team is not only hard work but it is also expensive. Youngsters like Varane or Hazard are hard to find and need to be snatched up as soon as possible. It is very likely that Real Madrid’s current defender will increase his value at Stamford Bridge just as many other did. He will have the perfect environment to become one of the best after spending a year next to Terry and then playing next to fellow compatriot Kurt Zouma.
