Watch Ad-Rock Offer Teens Advice on First Kisses, Breakups
Having already added actor and master sandwich crafter to his post-Beastie Boys résumé, Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz is getting into the advice game. The beloved rapper became the latest musician to take part in Rookie‘s “Ask a Grown Man” series, tackling tried-and-true teen topics from kissing to breakups.
Horovitz’s first adorable nugget of advice urges a young girl to overcome her first-kiss fears and plant one right on her new boyfriend. “Go ahead and kiss! Go ahead and do it!” he exclaims, adding later: “There’s something really special about being really close in just the moment, and you don’t have to do anything else. No big thing to do about it. Just a quick little kiss.”
Elsewhere, Horovitz admits sometimes white lies — like, “It’s not you, it’s me” or “My parents don’t want me dating anyone” — can be necessary to get through an awkward breakup. The rapper also advises one girl to be upfront with her boyfriend who never takes the initiative to make plans, reminding her with a laugh, “Boys, for the most part, are not very observant, or all that together smart for that matter.”
Lastly, Horovitz goes deep on a question about overcoming everyday insecurities and feeling more confident: “I know that when I get down or feel alone or depressed, I make music and it makes me happy. I would say, think about the thing that makes you happiest and do that. If it’s drawing or dancing or listening to music or bowling, whatever it is that makes you happy, I would focus on that and you’ll definitely gain some confidence.”
Horovitz has been making the media rounds lately to promote While We’re Young, the new Noah Baumbach film in which he co-stars alongside Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts. The MC also recently joined forces with Num Pang, a Vietnamese sandwich shop in New York City, to create the pastrami-based “Ad-Rock Pang”; the proceeds from the sandwich will benefit the Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition and Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue.
