Home Runs Fly as Crimson Hawks Drop a Pair to No. 9 Seton Hill

GREENSBURG, Pa. – Eight total home runs were hit on Monday, but just two by the Crimson Hawks as IUP dropped both ends of a conference doubleheader at ninth-ranked Seton Hill.

The Griffins picked up wins of 10-7 and 9-1 on the afternoon, forcing the Crimson Hawks to fall to 8-12 overall and 4-6 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division play.

Jonathan O'Neill (Pittsburgh/Chartiers Valley) had IUP's homer in the opening game, as his two-run shot to left field evening things at 3-3 in the fourth inning. The Crimson Hawks got their first run in the third, capitalizing on a throwing error by the Griffins.

By that point, Seton Hill (23-4, 11-1) had hit three home runs, all solo blasts. The Griffins a three-run homer in the fifth and another solo shot in the sixth to help them take a 9-3 lead. They added another run in the seventh to go on top 10-3 heading to the bottom half.

The Crimson Hawks tried to rally late, loading the bases with just one out in the bottom half. Chris Schaedel (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) brought in the first run on a single to left, before Rick Jones (New Castle/Laurel) forced a walk to bring in another and make it a 10-5 ballgame. Two straight fielder's choices, including an error, closed the gap to three runs but the Crimson Hawks ended up leaving the bases loaded with no more runs on the board in the 10-7 loss.

Six different pitchers saw time on the mound for the Crimson Hawks, with Dan Sepic (York, Pa./Central York) picking up his first loss of the season by giving up five earned runs on six hits in four innings.

In game two, Austin Mock (State College, Pa./State College) was responsible for IUP's lone run, a solo homer to make it a 2-1 ballgame in the second. The Griffins went on to score runs in the third, fourth, fifth and seventh innings to secure the 9-1 win.

Matt Douglas (Canonsburg/Canon-McMillan) took the loss to fall to 2-1 on the year, giving up six earned runs on five hits in 4.1 innings.
