Police pursue armed man across state lines

LAPORTE COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – Man leads police on chase across state lines after he reportedly fired his gun inside a Walgreen’s store.

Indiana State Police were called to continue the pursuit of a suspect who was wanted in Broadview, Ill. for allegedly firing shots in a local store.

When ISP started following the man at 7:52 p.m. who was later identified as Vincent J. Toliver, 34, from Madison, Wis., they reported that he had already driven his 2004 Ford Expedition across eastbound I-80 in Illinois and started driving on eastbound I-94.

Police stated that they attempted employing stop sticks three times without success throughout the pursuit.

According to police, when Toliver, who also reportedly goes by the last name Berry, had driven to the 39-mile marker on eastbound I-94, he appeared to have a change of heart, slowed his Expedition down, turned the vehicle around, drove westbound in the eastbound lanes on the interstate, stopped and exited his car.

When Toliver exited his car, police say he was holding a gun to his head.

After the LaPorte county Sheriff’s Department and the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department SWAT Team arrived at 10:10 p.m., they reported that the suspect was hit with a non-lethal weapon and taken into custody to the LaPorte County Jail. No injuries were reported.

After Toliver was arrested, police discovered the handgun he had in his possession was reportedly stolen out of Tennessee.

Toliver faces possible charges of possession of stolen property and resisting law enforcement.
