“Weston’s Troop 788 has a long history of providing community service and volunteer support to local organizations, so I knew I could count on them to help fill an unexpected gap in our volunteer workforce,” Cheryl Thompson, director of philanthropy for Connecticut Food Bank and a Weston resident said in a press release. “With very little advance notice, the boys formed a rapid response team and in less than two hours packed 900 weekend meals. I was very impressed with their enthusiasm for the mission and their willingness to help kids who don’t always know where they’ll get their next meal.”

The Connecticut Food Bank’s Kids’ BackPack program provides a bag of nutritious, kid-friendly food every Friday to 3,160 school-age children who have been identified by their teachers for being at risk for having too little or no food over the weekend. The food is supplied and delivered to the schools by the Connecticut Food Bank and the bags are packed by volunteers. This free program is administered through 108 schools around the state, including Weston-area schools located in Norwalk, Danbury, Bridgeport, Trumbull, Stamford and Stratford.
