Why Employers Should Consider Professional Part-Timers

In the hiring game, employers may tend to prefer to pick full-time staffers over part-timers. What they fail to realize, though, is that professional part-timers bring a lot (and sometimes more) to the table than a full-timer does.

One recent job seeker echoed this same sentiment. After semi-retiring at age 48, she began working remotely part-time for a small consulting company. She loved her job and the flexibility it afforded her. A change in management saw big changes in the company—all employees had to work full-time, or not at all. Eventually, she was able to return to her part-time schedule, but not without first having to deal with a corporation that just didn’t grasp the concept of hiring part-time workers.

Many job candidates know the benefits of working part-time. But employers need to equally recognize that part-time professionals are a great asset to any organization. Here are just a few reasons why:

It’s cheaper.

Having a part-timer on staff means saving money not having to fork over big bucks for a consultant, who often charge by the hour. Add to that not having to pay for medical, dental, and other typical employee benefits (such as a 401K), and you can see why hiring a part-time worker adds up to big savings for any organization.

It’s more reliable.

Imagine that your company has several large projects that are going to be rolled out during the calendar year. It’s not enough work to hire a full-time person, but it’s also too much for a consultant. Professional part-timers can be available to work when you need them, for as long as you need them. It is a huge time-saver since you don’t have to continuously hire someone per project.

It allows you to find quality workers.

Many job candidates seeking flex would prefer a steady part-time job than several short-term projects. Not only does it give them a somewhat stable income stream, but it also allows them to have better work-life balance, since they don’t always have to hunt for their next job. And since these professional part-timers have the best of both worlds (a job in the field that they love that gives them the flexibility to take care of their personal needs, too), they tend to be more loyal and dedicated to the organizations they work for.

Hiring a part-time professional is certainly a win/win for employees, but even more so for employers who get all the benefits of full-time workers at part-time prices.
