DNA of Indigenous Women Protects Hispanic Women in US from Breast Cancer | News | teleSUR: The researchers, led by Elad Ziv and Laura Fejerman, determined the presence of a gene, located on chromosome 6, next to an estrogen receptor gene, specific to indigenous South American peoples, that prevents breast cancer.

Women carrying this genetic trait have a lower density of breast tissue, while a high density is known for being an important risk factor of the disease.

Therefore, Latin American women in the United States who have indigenous ancestors are less likely to develop breast cancer.
