City Officials Urging NYC to Protect Long Beach Water Source
Long Beach City Officials spoke at Long Island Regional Planning Council to protect Lloyd Aquifer.
City officials spoke before the Long Island Regional Planning Council about an important water source for Long Beach.
New York City reportedly proposed a reopening of wells in Queens that would tap into the Lloyd Aquifer, a critical water source for Long Beach.
“Experts have indicated that salt water intrusion is getting closer to the Long Beach shoreline and wells than has been previously predicted,” according to the city. “This makes the potential loss of access to fresh water from the Lloyd Aquifer even more critical.”

City Council officialsare urging the Long Island Regional Planning Council and others to obey a moratorium on opening wells to protect the aquifer. The moratorium was enacted in 1986.
