The uneasy relationship between cricket and betting has resurfaced once again after a fan watching the 2nd ODI between England and India in Cardiff was thrown out from the stadium after being supposedly found to give information to bookmakers in the subcontinent.
There is a slight delay in broadcast feeds for televised games due to which those with access to information from inside the ground can manipulate the betting markets. Chris Watts, head of the ECB's anti-corruption unit, confirmed after the match to the Cricket Paper, the UK's weekly cricket newspaper, that a man had been ejected by stewards at the Swalec Stadium on Wednesday for "breaching the ticket terms and conditions".
The man in question was removed from the ground after being seen using two laptops and a mobile phone during India’s innings. This incident has cautioned the ECB authorities, and, in all likelihood, additional ECB anti-corruption unit authorities will be present for the final three matches of the ODI series.
This sort of action is nothing new for the ECB as nine people were thrown out of matches taking place around England in 2013, in addition to 12 the year before that. They recognize that games televised live in the sub-continent are a soft target to bookmakers and are on high alert for these occasions.
"There have been several incidents of people being asked to leave for so-called court-siding," Angus Porter, chief executive of the Professional Cricketers' Association, said. "The evidence we have points to high-profile matches that are televised in Asia when there's an opportunity for people to beat the TV delay if the match is being broadcast on the Indian subcontinent.
"So they're not necessarily corrupting the match itself but engaging in corrupt activity in the sense they are getting bookies fixing the odds before the events are seen on TV in India."
