Breast cancer awareness breakfast 'makes strides' in Jersey City

A large gathering of advocates for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer met early Friday morning for a kickoff breakfast at The Westin hotel in Jersey City.

Attendees -- sporting pink shirts, some with "Finish the Fight against breast cancer" written across the front -- filed into the hotel to support the fight against a cancer that will develop in about one of eight women in the course of their lifetime and claim the lives of over 400 women in 2014, according to ww5.komen.org.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, an organization under the American Cancer Society, brought participants at the event up to date on the various ways they can help the cause.

This information included the approximate 300 communities nationwide that are uniting to raise awareness about breast cancer, the easy ways to start a team to raise funds, and hear about the latest innovations in breast cancer research.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Jersey City will continue their efforts with a 5K walk on Oct. 19 in Jersey City to raise money for breast cancer research and help provide mammograms for woman who need them.

The walk, which will begin at Lincoln Park, has already raised almost $3,000 and garnered close to 100 people pledging to walk.
