Semi Precious Weapons Strip Down for Yahoo Music
New York City glam-rockers Semi Precious Weapons have some very high-profile fans — Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Kesha among them — but in many ways they’re still a cult group. Thankfully, their diehard fans (famous or otherwise) have sustained them during a four-year recording hiatus (the unfortunate result of complications with their former record label). And now, with the long-delayed release of their third album, Aviation, Semi Precious Weapons are finally firing on all cylinders again.
Released on RedZone, the label helmed by superproducer Christopher “Tricky” Stewart, Aviation sees the band going in a more pop/R&B direction that will surely appeal to fans who discovered them via their tours opening for Gaga and Kesha — while still retaining the theatrical rock element of their earlier work with legendary David Bowie producer Tony Visconti. And perhaps the best thing about the new album? The songs are so strong, they even translate wonderfully to a semi-acoustic format, as evidenced by the exclusive Yahoo Music performances here of new tracking “Aviation High,” “Look to the Stars,” and “Never Going Home.”
See Justin Tranter and company strip down, so to speak, at Yahoo HQ, and watch SPW’s flamboyant and charismatic frontman discuss the band’s long and arduous, but always glamorous, journey over the past few years.
