LOWELL, N.C., July 9 (UPI) -- Police now believe a missing North Carolina woman who disappeared from Myrtle Beach faked the ordeal to avoid appearing in court on felony charges.
After spending days searching, North Myrtle Beach, S.C. city spokesman Pat Dowling confirmed Wednesday that investigators have concluded that Amy Arrington did not drown in the ocean on July 5, as her husband claimed to fear.
"Police determined that Amy Lynette Arrington did not drown in the ocean off North Myrtle Beach on July 5."
Police are currently operating under the assumption that Amy Arrington is at large, having staged her disappearance to avoid appearing in court on charges of forgery and identity theft.
Her husband, Paul Arrington, is now charged with filing a false police report, as police believe he "conspired for her to disappear to avoid having to show up in court in North Carolina to answer to charges filed against her in that state."
Paul's family said they were unaware of Arrington's criminal past and think even he didn't know of his wife's history
"She came to my wedding, and I've met her a few times, hung out a little bit, but I really didn't know anything about her," Paul's brother Todd Arrington told local reporters.
"I don't think Paul really had a clue."
