Boston Chip Music Artists Take A Byte Out Of Nyc

Sept. 24, 2010 - PRLog -- New York, NY  – Monthly music and visual arts showcase I/O welcomes Boston-based chip musicians Br1ght Pr1imate, Active Knowledge, and Disasterpeace to its October 4, 2010 event.  Featuring performers that use the Nintendo Game Boy and Nintendo NES as musical instruments, this free show combines electronic “chip music” with live graphics by visual artist Invaderbacca.  Sponsored by the Antagonist Art Movement and presented by Alphabet City Soup, the performance will begin at 7:30 PM at Niagara Bar in the Lower East Side.

This I/O will be an awesome opportunity to see some of Boston’s best new breed of chip musicians show us what they’ve got!”  

Chip musicians use vintage computers, keyboards, and video games to create raw, gritty electronic music. Visual “chip” artists manipulate these computers and game systems during a musical performance, projecting the resulting graphics on a screen, “playing” their art live as accompaniment to the music. Chip musicians also sing or play conventional musical instruments in their live sets; the songs are pre-programmed but mixed and improvised live so that no two performances are ever the same.


Br1ght Pr1mate

Former Boston rock scene alums Lydia Marsala and James Therrien (Fugitive Kind) combine forces for a new take on live electronic music. Using a unique blend of live vocals, acoustic instruments, Game Boys and vintage electronics, Br1ght Pr1mate explores, bends and completely ignores the boundaries of Chiptune, Pop, Art, Electro, Rock, Jazz and Soul. Their music has been featured on FOX News National Morning Show "Fox & Friends", and has received praise from The Boston Globe and The Boston Phoenix.


Active Knowledge

"It's not so much the preservation of youth, as the celebration of it," says Chris Mahoney, better known as Active Knowledge. Firing notes through an original Nintendo Entertainment System, Active Knowledge mixes vintage video game sounds with synchronized glitchy, spastic visuals. The idea is unadulterated fun, with a focus on un-adult.


Disasterpeace

Disasterpeace is a curious form of chip music that blends progressive rock, minimalist, jazz, and dance tendencies with an aesthetic sensibility that pays homage to the sounds of the past yet that is largely synthesized from the ground up.  He has been featured in Time magazine.
