Decade Old Apartheid Abuse Cases against IBM and Ford Allowed to Proceed

Apparently time does not heal all wounds. U.S. District Judge Shira Scheindlin in New York ruled that IBM Corp and Ford Motor Company are not off of the hook as far as lawsuits in apartheid abuse cases dating back 10 years.

There are three suits which aim to hold the two companies responsible for selling computers and cars to the South African government during the apartheid movement. The suit is linking the two companies as being partly responsible for the system of segregation which ended in South Africa 20 years ago.

According to published sources, Judge Scheindlin ruled that the corporations “may be liable for human rights abuses committed overseas under a law that allows non-citizens claiming violations of international laws to sue in the U.S.” She also rejected the argument that “earlier court rulings interpreting the 1789 Alien Tort Statute shield multinationals from such lawsuits.”
