Former Angels player and manager Jim Fregosi was reportedly in critical condition after he was taken off life support at a Miami hospital on Thursday. Fregosi had suffered a series of strokes while on a Carribbean cruise.

Angels spokesman Tim Mead confirmed only that Fregosi had been transported from the Cayman Islands to Miami after he suffered a stroke while on the cruise.

Fregosi, 71, played for the Angels from 1961-71, earning six trips to the All-Star Game. Fregosi, who reached the majors at age 19, was the everyday shortstop throughout his career in Anaheim. His 18-year career also included stops with the Texas Rangers, New York Mets and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Fregosi managed the Angels from 1978-81, compiling a 237-248 record. He later managed the Chicago White Sox, Philadelphia Philles and Toronto Blue Jays. He took the Phillies to the World Series in 1993.

Fregosi has worked as a special assistant to the general manager of the Atlanta Braves for the past 13 years.
