Hillsborough County deputy arrested at Disney on DUI charges suspended without pay, officials say

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A deputy with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office was arrested Wednesday on DUI charges near Disney.

Troopers were called to Buena Vista Drive and Broadway just before 10 p.m. Tuesday, investigators said.

Troopers said Timothy Michael Craig drove and crashed his Toyota Tundra three-quarters of a way through a pedestrian bridge near Disney Springs.

Craig hit a stop sign, entered a pedestrian crosswalk bridge and bounced off several pillars, investigators said.

A witness pulled the keys from the ignition.

Craig was taken to Celebration Hospital for further treatment and was released, troopers said.

Troopers found two open Fireball whiskey bottles in Craig’s vehicle between the driver seat and the center console, investigators said.

When troopers spoke to the veteran deputy, he seemed confused about why they would open a DUI investigation.

"Sir, do you understand all these rights I have explained to you?" an FHP trooper asked Craig in in-vehicle camera video of the encounter.

"No, because I don't even know where you're going with this," Craig responded. "That's fine."

Troopers said they tried to question Craig about the crash, but he refused to answer or perform a field sobriety test. He was in and out of consciousness and told troopers he didn't remember anything, investigators said.

Craig was placed under arrest at 1:07 a.m. Wednesday and faces charges of driving under the influence, a chemical or controlled substance, investigators said.

Craig refused a Breathalyzer test, troopers said.

According to an FHP arrest report, Craig's son was with him at the time of the crash. The report did not say how old the son was.

Craig has posted bail, he's under internal investigation and has been suspended without pay, the sheriff's office said. He's been with the sheriff's office since 1994.
