Rick Eckstein, former Washington Nationals hitting coach and the older brother of former Angels shortstop David Eckstein, has been added to the Angels coaching staff as the player information coach.

The newly created position will involve on-field coaching before the game, most likely working with the hitters. During the games, Eckstein will work on scouting and defensive positioning.

Eckstein, 40, is the third new member of the Angels major league coaching staff, joining  hitting coach Don Baylor and third base coach Gary DiSarcina.

Eckstein was the Nationals hitting coach for five seasons until he was fired in the middle of last season.
