Overview

After a career in scholarly publishing at Oxford University Press and Macmillan, Richard Gedye joined STM Association in 2010 to act as their Director of Outreach Programmes, and as part of this role manages the Research4Life initiative. Research4Life is the collective name for the four programmes – HINARI, AGORA, OARE and ARDI – that provide developing countries with free or low cost access to academic and professional peer-reviewed content online.

In the latest Masters in Publishing series webinar, Richard will reflect on the challenges of nurturing markets for published scientific research in conversation with Mark Ware. He will consider how publishers can move from philanthropic supply of content via initiatives like Research4Life to the development of more conventional bilateral commercial relationships. He will consider that in order to effectively and painlessly secure this transition, it will involve a collaborative effort by publishing stakeholders at each end of that spectrum.

The challenge is to ensure that publisher and society expectations about the appropriate balance between philanthropic and revenue generating activity are aligned and mutually understood. Who better to discuss how this can be achieved?

The webinar will provide valuable insights into this issue for staff responsible for corporate social responsibility and sales and market development, who need to fully understand the strategic options and practical interventions that will help secure success. It will also be of interest to editorial and publishing managers whose responsibility involves communication between publishers and society executives.
