A veteran Chattanooga police officer is under investigation after a 17-year-old claims he was assaulted while in custody in the Juvenile Detention Center, police said.

The Internal Affairs and Major Crimes units are investigating the allegations against Officer Mario Cunningham, according to a news release from police spokesman Nathan Hartwig.

No information was immediately available on the nature of the assault, which reportedly took place Sunday.

Hartwig said Cunningham, who has been on the force for more than 10 years, has been relieved of duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
