UK coalition government abolishes women’s advisory body
The Women’s National Commission (WNC), a UK body which advises the government on women’s views and acts as an umbrella organisation for UK-based women’s groups, has fallen foul of the government’s bonfire of the quangos.
Set up in 1969, the WNC will be abolished in December this year, with its core functions being absorbed into the Goverment Equalities Office.
Joyce Gould, the WNC’s chair said in a press release today: “The decision to dismantle an independent and cost effective mechanism to give women a direct voice to government is yet another blow for women across the UK at a time when the Comprehensive Spending Review is likely to hit women and families disproportionately”.
Oh, dear, this is a sad day.
