We need your support. - Harbourside

Dear Members

We need your support.

You will be aware of the concerns that the Chamber, and many of those in the Harbourside area, have regarding the inevitable job losses that will happen if the Harbourside re-zoning goes ahead.

In summary, we believe the re-zoning in this area will bring job losses, as was stated in the reports commissioned by the Dunedin City Council.

We also understand there is an exciting opportunity in oil and gas exploration off the coast of Dunedin as evidenced by the recent $US30m joint venture announcement between Origin and Anadarko to drill. If the huge potential is to be realised (each production rig generates 400 to 500 permanent jobs) then this area must remain industrial.

We have prepared an open request to the Dunedin City Council which we are going to publish in the ODT next week. It reads as follows:

Harbourside – Loses Jobs, Prevents Job Opportunities

The companies and organisations sponsoring this page requests that Council:-

  • Carefully review its own expert independent advice that states that both local and regional jobs will be lost if Harbourside goes ahead.
  • Rejects advice that new jobs can be created in Harbourside by relocation of hospitality facilities from the centre of the City.
  • Considers the independent professional advice commissioned by the Chamber, on behalf of existing jobs and job opportunities for Dunedin, and provided to the Council that confirms the certainty of job losses should Harbourside proceed.
  • Reviews the additional information that the Council Mediator has collected over his year-long investigation into the serious consequences of proceeding with Harbourside.

The sponsors then ask Council to formally resolve that:-

  1. The Council will not take any decisions that risk the loss of jobs in Dunedin.
  2. The Council will take all possible steps to facilitate the creation of new jobs in Dunedin.
  3. And to this end the Council will immediately withdraw the proposed Harbourside Plan Change and save the jobs that will be lost if this is not done.

Here’s how you can help us.

We would like to give you the opportunity to support for this letter by way of placing your business logo as an endorsement that would surround this request.
