SXSW: Disposable Social Network LoKast Shrinks World to 300 Feet

lokastAUSTIN, Texas -- Like a combination of sneakernet and a file sharing network, NearVerse's free LoKast iPhone app creates tiny social networks out of 300-foot zones so that users can meet each other, chat with each other, and download each others' shared photos, videos, music, contacts and website URLs. When they walk away from each other, the network essentially disappears -- poof -- which is why NearVerse calls this "the first disposable social network."

We've been testing this app, but apparently, nobody else within 300 feet is doing the same. According to NearVerse, the system works even when there's no 3G or Edge coverage because it can transfer files via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

So, why is this thing launching at SXSW? Music plays a crucial role in the app in two ways. First, users can select songs from their iPhone libraries to share with others nearby, offering them a 30-second sample of the song. If they like it, they can purchase the song from iTunes -- or, if one of NearVerse's music partners (including IODA, Monalis 360 and The Orchard) has designated the song as a free promotional download, users can trade the entire song.

CES 2010"LoKast in many ways is going to shake up the music business by essentially making iTunes social," said NearVerse chief talker Vijay Chattha. "Even Steve Jobs hasn't figured this out yet on the iPhone."

In addition to letting users share media locally with each other, the LoKast app (iTunes link) also functions as an invisible, free demo CD bands can give to fans at their shows. People in the crowd who have the app installed on their iPhones or iPod Touches can download music, videos or photos from the bands they're watching. Mark Cuban's Magnolia Pictures is also a partner, and will allow users to share promotional clips with each other through these "disposable" networks.

For its official Monday morning launch, LoKast has signed up bands including The Boxer Rebellion, The Ruse, Bazaar Royale, BlackMahal and Katia to distribute "exclusive music and music videos" to live audiences at their shows this month using the system, and other bands can sign up for an account on LoKast to do the same.
