Woman Calls Number After Seeing Magnet on Man's Car, Ends Up Saving His Life

Share

It was just another day for Renee Bruens of Tennessee when she was in the parking lot of a Gold’s Gym. She passed a car that had unique magnets on it, paused to check them out, and made a decision that would change her life forever.

Most of us wouldn’t think much of handing a few dollars to someone trying to get something to eat, or giving away some belongings that someone else could use more.

But giving away a part of yourself? A literal, flesh-and-blood piece? That takes a special kind of charity.

The car belonged to a 30-year-old man named Joshua Surovey. He was desperate, and had been on the march to try and get someone’s attention.

After struggling with obesity-related health issues, he was told his kidneys were failing. Before he could look for a donor, though, he had to lose weight.

So he started working out. He frequented Gold’s Gym and lost a total of 200 pounds.

Once he was within healthy weight range for a transplant, he began scouring the surrounding area for someone who would be willing to donate a kidney.

“Kidney Donor Needed, Blood Type O, A New Kidney for Joshua,” his signs read. He also made magnets to keep on his car, just in case someone like Bruens happened to walk by.

She was struck by his plea, and got tested. When she got the results and they were a match, she contacted him.

All it took was a four-hour surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center to get Bruens’ kidney to Surovey. It kicked in immediately, and Surovey was free to live life as he pleased.

The two joked after the operation, with Surovey repeating over and over how thankful he was for her sacrifice.

“We’re both doing really well, both recovering quicker than we anticipated,” he said after the surgery. “She actually went to work for a half-day today.”

“It’s been long and hard,” said Surovey. “Perseverance has paid off. Hard work and dedication, not only in the gym to qualify for a transplant, but also in my efforts of finding a living donor.”

“I did everything in my power to make sure I was healthy. I also had to do everything in my power to find a donor.”

“I truly wanted to live, and I wasn’t going to let anything get in the way of that. Now that I have received this blessing from Renee, the kidney transplant I desperately needed to move on, a brighter future is now within reach. I’ll be able to do all the things I intended on doing now that I’m healthy.”

It’s nice to know there are still selfless people out there like Bruens, looking for opportunities to do good. This world could use more of that.
