The Unicorn
Eastern Unicorns
I recently posted a thread asking “What Animal Brought the Myth of the Unicorn to Life?” I received replies some stating the Unicorn was a subject of the rhinoceros and a horse being cloned, the extinct elasmotherium rhinoceros, the narwhal, the oryx and the eland. Well, I am going to elaborate on the myth of the Unicorn.
The Chinese, for example, believed that the Unicorn appearance was an interpretation of good times to come. They still believe today that the Unicorn is real and because it has not appeared means that we are living in bad times, but when goodness reigns. The Unicorn will appear again. The Chinese has portrayed the Unicorn in many of their drawings. The Unicorn has the hooves of a horse, the body of a deer, the tail of an ox and a short horn growing out the middle of its forehead. Down the Unicorns back, flows five colors representing the five sacred Chinese colors: black, red, blue, white and yellow. The belly of the beast is yellow and has green scales like a dragon. The Chinese called this Unicorn the Kiln, a combination of both male and female Unicorn that will not eat any living thing but only plant life that has died.
There is a belief that the Earth is only 6,000 years old. I will touch up on this topic later; however, my reason for saying this is. The first Unicorns are said to have appeared almost 5, 000 years ago. If it is true that the Earth is only 6,000 years old then this would mean that the Unicorn was present a 1,000 years after the birth of the Earth. Again, will touch up on this topic later. When the Unicorn appeared 5,000 years ago it was to give an Emperor by the name of Fu Hsi the secrets of the written language.
Emperor Fu Hsi was the first Emperor of China who reigned for over 100 years. Legend has it that Emperor Fu Hsi was a shaman that could tame wild animals by telepathic communication. He could also control the weather patterns, invented fishing, cooking, trapping, music, writing, the angular measurement, trigrams and Tai Chi principles.
In the year 2697 B.C. another Unicorn appeared to an Emperor by the name of Huang Di. Emperor Huang Di, in Chinese mythology, is regarded as the central god among the other five gods in their heaven. In the Chinese culture, Emperor Huang Di is called the originator of the centralized state, lord of the underworld and cosmic ruler. The Unicorn that appeared to the Yellow Emperor foretold of the birth and death of Confucius. It is said that a Unicorn appeared to Confucius mother and gave her a small piece of jade and placed its head in her lap. On the piece of jade was a message that foretold of the wisdom Confucius would possess.
The Asian countries also had Unicorn traditions. The Japanese Unicorn was called Kirin, its description was different from that of the Chinese and it was a beast to be feared. The Kirin Unicorn could detect guilt and pierce those guilty through the heart with its horns. The Arabians and Persians called their Unicorn Karkadann. This Unicorn is said to have been so ferocious that it could kill an elephant. Karkadann had the body of a rhino, tail like a lion, three hooves on each leg and a single black horn curved like a crescent. This Unicorn was fond of virgin women; the Arabians and Persians would use women to lure the Karkadann in to caputre it. Alexander the Great is said to be the only person who was able to tame Karkadann. I believe that this is the horse that Alexander the Great rode on into his battles. What do you think?
Western Unicorns
Herodotus, an Ancient Greek historian also called the “Father of History", is the first historian known to collect his materials systematically and test their accuracy to a certain extent. During the 3rd century B.C., Herodotus wrote about the “Horned Ass of Africa". By the 4th century B.C., the Unicorn had become overly popular in the Western World. Aristotle, the famous Greek philosopher, concluded that the Unicorn could be real. However, the stories of its magical powers were not. The Germans were strong believers of the Unicorn. Their churches during the Middle Ages had paintings and sculptures of the Unicorn, they called Einhorn. The Harz Mountains located in the central region of Germany is where Einhorn is to supposedly have dwelt. To this day, there is a cave called Einhornhohle, after the Unicorn. Einhorn was pale in color and had a shiny horn.
I personally did not believe that Unicorns existed because there is no hard evidence that there were any Unicorns, besides paintings, drawings and sculptures. Anyone can paint their imagination of what they perceive an elephant or rhinoceros to be. During, my research of this topic I found out that the Bible mentions Unicorns. I am a true believer of the Bible, however, the Bible speaks in parables.
Job: 39:-12
9 Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib?
10 Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee?
11 Wilt thou trust him, because his strength is great? or wilt thou leave thy labour to him?
12 Wilt thou believe him, that he will bring home thy seed, and gather it into thy barn?
Numbers 23:22 “God brought them out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn.”
Numbers 24:8 “God brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn: he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows.”
Psalms 29:6 “He maketh them also to skip like a calf; Lebanon and Sirion like a young unicorn.”
Psalms 92:10 “But my horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of an unicorn: I shall be anointed with fresh oil.”
Psalms 22:21 “Save me from the lion’s mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns.”
In the book of Genesis, God gave Adam the job of naming everything he saw. The Unicorn is said to be the first animal that he named, placing it above all other animals. The reason why I say that the Bible speaks in parables and what it mentions about the Unicorn is probably referring to a similar animal is based on the flood. When God went to Noah, told him to build a ship, and gather two kinds of every animal on earth; the Unicorn was not one of those animals.
The elasmotherium, is an extinct giant rhinoceros that had a 33inch long skull with a huge horn coming out of its forehead. The aurochs, known to the Assyrian as Rimu, was a huge creature a little short of the elephant with the shape of bull that had extraordinary speed and strength, both could have been the animal describe as a Unicorn in the bible. The Narwhal is called the Unicorn of the sea. It is found in the Arctic coastal waters and rivers, has a 8 foot long ivory tusk that grows out the the narwhal’s upper lip. In medieval times, narwhal tusks that washed ashore were thought to be from the mythical unicorn Other mysterious animals of the unknown would include the Big foot, Loch Ness Monster, Yeti, all which have been claimed to have been seen, but there is no hard evidence to be sure they are fact or fiction.
