Teaching young parrots to speak
It is always interesting to hear a bird speaking with human tongue and it never gets bored. Usually, the bird learns words which are repeated many times in their surroundings and here is a small guide how to teach them to speak properly.
First of all, the parrot that is to be taught must be separated into his own small cage.Feather colour does not affect his ability to learn but what affects is his species and age.
The fastest and easiest to teach are larger species of parrots, so it is rare to see a large parrot in a cage that does not know a single sentence to pronounce.
However, with small Australian parrot, a very common species, the job is very tough. Compared to larger species, he is not a fast learner although with proper work you can see the results.
You need to start the process of teaching when the parrot is very young, the best time is two or three days after he gets out of the nest, and you should know that the best results are achieved with males!
The parrot that is about to get taught is put in his own cage, on a specific and well seen place. For a few times a day you need to step in front of the cage and repeat 10 -20 times the same specific words that you have chosen for his learning program. At the same time, parrot is taught to get out of the cage and land on his master’s finger. A period of one to two weeks is needed for him to learn that and after that he just willingly sits on your finger and listens to your course.
During the course, do not ever become nervous or chase the parrot if he starts flying across the room because that scares him and the results of teaching will be poor. Especially you must not catch him with your hands. When the parrot is out of his cage, food pot needs to be on the cage because he will land on the cage for food. When he gets used to that, food pot is put inside the cage, door is left open so he learns to get in the cage by himself willingly.
With this method, success of your teaching will be seen after 1 – 2 months, but it is individual and may depend on the parrot or the skill of his master. Anyways, happy learning and have lots of fun doing it!
