Tips For Housebreaking A Puppy
Probably one of the top issues with bringing a puppy into your home is how in the world are we going to teach little Fido from "doing their business: inside the home”.
Many people have never learned how to properly do this and as a result have found a new owner for their puppy.
Hopefully these tips about housebreaking for puppies will hasten this process and no longer be a problem for you.
Housebreaking Tip No. 1
Always keep in mind some breeds of dogs are quicker to learn housebreaking puppy methods than other breeds so how long to housebreak a puppy will vary according to the breed.
Don't become discouraged just because your puppy takes longer than you feel is reasonable. It will "click" on in their mind with constant teaching.
Housebreaking Tip No. 2
It is normal for puppies to be around 12 weeks old before they are physically capable of holding the urge to go.
So with this in mind keep a close watch on the puppy after they have eaten or drank water.
They will need to be put outside within no longer than 15 minutes. When they do use the bathroom outside make a big fuss over them showing them you are very pleased with what they just did.
Soon the puppy will associate this praise and loving with the fact they pooped or urinated not in the home but outside in the yard.
Strict Routine- Key To Housebreak A Puppy Fast
For those who need to know how to housebreak a puppy fast the key is stay with a very strict pattern or routine for when you feed and water the puppy.
Typically a puppy will need to go outside a minimum of six times a day to do their business.
Keep a leash handy and after the puppy has eaten or drank watch them very closely.
If you see them begin to turn in circles or start smelling around this is a red flag they are about to unload. Place the leash on them and go outside.
Wait until they have done their business. Now is the time to make the big fuss and cuddle, giving praise along with a puppy treat.
Using this in conjunction with a small puppy training crate will speed the process up considerably.
How To Housebreak Older Dogs
What if you have an older dog that has never been housebroken?
This to can be done so these ideas for housebreaking older dogs should help. Using the crate method is a good choice for older dog housebreaking training as well as using the same type of puppy training pads for the dog to use.
Some people still feel the top way to housebreak older dogs as well as puppies is the old tried and true newspaper method.
This is where you put down old newspapers near the door, and when your dog shows signs they need to go you lead them to the newspaper.
Personally, I think this is a good place to start but is only a stopgap adult and puppy housebreaking method because we are not really teaching the dog to hold until they are let outside.
